In the sixth, after issuing a leadoff walk, Suarez struck out Pete Alonso and retired the next two batters to maintain the shutout.
Nick Sogard, the Red Sox second baseman, described Suarez as a “true master of his craft, an artist.” This outing marked Suarez’s first time completing seven or more innings since April, which he viewed as a crucial step with the postseason approaching.
Following Suarez, Garrett Whitlock pitched a scoreless eighth inning. Orioles manager Craig Albernaz acknowledged the team’s offensive struggles, noting that they “couldn’t get anything going off Suarez.” The Orioles managed only six hits in the game, all singles, and have scored just 14 runs in their last 47 innings. Albernaz also commented on the team’s four-game losing streak, stating, “It’s always disappointing to lose four in a row, especially at the point of the season we’re at… We’ve done it to ourselves all year.”
A moment of tension arose in the eighth inning when Orioles leadoff hitter Blaze Alexander singled off Whitlock. During an inning-ending double play, Alexander slid hard into Sogard at second base. After the play, Alexander and Sogard exchanged words, leading to both benches and bullpens emptying. Tracy downplayed the incident, calling it “not a big deal.” Alexander later flapped his wings, an apparent attempt to energize his teammates and the crowd, but the Orioles’ offense remained ineffective.
The Orioles have now lost three straight one-run games and their record in such situations is 16-22. Their overall record stands at 69-73. The Red Sox, with their victory, improved to 77-65, maintaining a six-game lead over the fourth-place wild card team with 20 games remaining.
