Nebraska’s Second-Half Surge Secures Victory
The Nebraska Cornhuskers opened their season with a 49-21 victory over the Ohio Bobcats at Memorial Stadium. The team showcased a dominant second-half performance, outscoring the Bobcats 35-7 after going into halftime with a narrow 14-13 lead. This win marks the 100th season-opening victory in Husker history, played in front of an NCAA-record 411th consecutive sellout crowd.
Freshman running back Jamal Rule was a key contributor, especially in the second half. He accumulated over 100 rushing yards after halftime, finishing the game with 122 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries. Rule’s second-half surge included 106 yards on just eight carries, highlighted by an 11-yard touchdown run that extended Nebraska’s lead to 42-21. He also contributed through the air with a 24-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter, totaling 169 all-purpose yards on 17 touches in his debut.
Quarterback Anthony Colandrea also made a strong debut for the Huskers. The senior completed 18-of-32 passes for 275 yards and three touchdowns. Colandrea added 10 carries for 23 yards and another touchdown on the ground, accounting for 298 yards of total offense and four scores. He led an offense that avoided turnovers and scored touchdowns on its final five drives, amassing 523 total yards, split between 275 passing and 248 rushing yards.
Key Performances and Defensive Efforts
Beyond Rule and Colandrea, other Huskers delivered notable performances. Junior running back Mekhi Nelson rushed 10 times for 64 yards and a touchdown, and added two receptions for 65 yards, including a 51-yard touchdown catch. Nelson finished with 129 all-purpose yards and two scores, marking his best career performance for Nebraska.
Jacory Barney Jr. continued his strong play with five receptions for 60 yards and an eight-yard run, while also performing without errors in the punt return game. Kwazi Gilmer contributed with five catches for 58 yards, including a nine-yard touchdown grab on Nebraska’s final offensive play.
On the defensive side, Rex Guthrie secured a crucial fourth-quarter interception that set up Nebraska’s final score, adding five tackles. Defensive back Jamir Conn led the defense with eight tackles and a pass breakup. The Huskers’ defense recorded eight pass breakups in total, with Donovan Jones and Victor Evans III each contributing two.
Game Flow and Second-Half Adjustments
The game began with Ohio taking an early 7-0 lead. Nebraska responded with a 12-play, 75-yard drive, capped by Rule’s one-yard touchdown run to tie the score. Ohio then kicked two field goals of over 40 yards by Will Hryszko to take a 13-7 lead. Nebraska regained the lead before halftime when Colandrea connected with Rule for a 24-yard touchdown reception, making it 14-13.
The second half started with some initial struggles for Nebraska’s offense, including a loss of 21 yards on the first two plays. However, the defense held strong, allowing Colandrea to lead an 11-play, 73-yard drive that ended with his 13-yard touchdown run, putting the Huskers up 21-13. Following another defensive stop, Nelson extended the lead to 28-13 with a 29-yard touchdown run.
Ohio briefly narrowed the gap to 28-21 early in the fourth quarter with a touchdown and a two-point conversion. However, Nebraska dominated the remainder of the game. Nelson broke free for a 51-yard touchdown reception, followed by Rule’s final touchdown run, and Gilmer’s nine-yard touchdown catch, sealing the 49-21 victory. The Huskers will next host Bowling Green on Saturday at 6 p.m. (CT) at Memorial Stadium.
