LWV spotlights Shelter Island Historical Society’s centennial

Minutes of the Shelter Island Historical Society's first meeting in 1922. The centennial is a focus of the next League of Women Voters meeting.

The local chapter of the League of Women Voters holds its annual meeting on Sunday, May 15, and all are welcome to join. The guest speaker is Nanette Lawrenson, executive director of the Shelter Island Historical Society, who will talk about the society’s centennial.

The chapter — officially the League of Women Voters of the Hamptons, Shelter Island & North Fork — meets at the Shelter Island History Center at 2 PM.

The meeting also marks the official celebration of merging chapters to form a broad-based LWV for the East End. Organizers will provide celebratory refreshments.

After Lawrenson’s 100th anniversary talk, LWV president Susan Wilson will preside over the business portion of the annual meeting. Next, treasurer Cathy Peacock will present the budget for 2022/23 for adoption. Finally, nominating Committee Chair Ursula Lync will present the slate of officers and directors.

Also on the agenda, LWV Youth Committee Co-chair Dale Grant will present the Betty Desch Student Leadership Award; Southampton High School senior Leilani Robinson receives this year’s $2,000 grant.

The LWV will also formally announce that Southampton High School senior Shea Rodriguez will join the NYS League Education Foundation’s annual “Students Inside Albany” conference from May 22 to 25. She will learn about state government and spend time on the NYS Senate and Assembly floor with State Senator Anthony Palumbo and Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele, Jr.

Organizers ask attendees to carpool and RSVP to 631-324-4637. For more information, to join or make a donation, visit the LWV’s website at lwvhsinf.org/.
