As the last holds of winter finally loosen on the landscape, new life can be seen emerging all around during April at Mashomack Preserve.

The Nature Conservancy invites you to stroll through the woods and meadows of this extraordinary landscape that occupies one-third of Shelter Island. Welcome the return of the bluebirds as they begin nesting. And listen for the familiar call of the osprey as they return from their winter migration in the south.

Earth Day at Mashomack

Lastly, all are welcome to celebrate Earth Day at Mashomack. Drop in on Saturday, April 22, between 10 AM and 3 PM for crafts, snacks, readings, nature activities, and more! No registration is required.

Book in the Woods

The Book in the Woods for April is “And Then It’s Spring” by Julie Fogliono. Pages are posted along the family-friendly half-mile Red Trail. It tells the story of a young boy and his dog who, tired of brown mud after a long winter, resolve to plant a garden. So they dig, plant, play, and wait. And wait. Until, at last, the brown becomes a more hopeful shade of brown, a sign that spring may finally be on its way.
