Owned by The Nature Conservancy, the 2,000-acre Mashomack Preserve encompasses one-third of Shelter Island. It has 20 miles of trails open to the public daily in summer, with reduced hours off-season. Called the “Jewel of the Peconic Estuary,” Mashomack’s undeveloped land and pristine waterways are recognized as important resources including fragile marine ecosystems, some of which occur nowhere else.
