The Shelter Island Country Club pro shop opens for the season on April 7 and now’s the time to sign up for lessons or register a child for the junior golf program.

SICC, known affectionately as “Goat Hill,” is a historic, 9-hole public golf course. Established in 1901, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Little has changed in the past 122 years.

The course covers 2,512 yards of widely varying, hilly terrain. These variations keep the course interesting round after round and from season to season. The club is situated on one of the highest points on the Island, with scenic views of Peconic Bay and Dering Harbor.

Weather permitting, you’re welcome to play the course on the honor system. The daily greens fee is $20 for non-members (leave it in the box). Unfortunately, no carts are available during the week just yet.

But you can rent carts from the pro shop on weekends through April. The clubhouse will open for the season on May 6, and the annual membership meeting occurs May 7. Carts will be available on weekends through Memorial Day and then daily through the season.

Check the SICC website for additional details.

SICC encourages returning members to pay their dues by April 15 to help with the club’s cash flow.

“We still have expenses during these lean winter months,” the club says.

New members are always welcome. SICC memberships start at $575 for seniors, with discounts for first responders and veterans across all membership categories. Not a golfer? There’s even a social membership.

The address is SICC, P.O. Box 852, Shelter Island Heights, NY 11965. Or, you can pay by check or credit card in person at the pro shop.

The club is offering a new category of membership: If you’re staying at one of Shelter Island’s hotels or B&Bs, you can play as a member. For more information, call Jim Gereghty at 631-749-2248.
