Oh, sweet hot dog on a bun! It’s no April Fools’ joke — starting April 1, you’ll be able to eat again at the Shelter Island Heights Pharmacy Soda Fountain counter.
Greg Ofrias and Stacey Soloviev confirmed that April 1 is the target date. While the Soda Fountain has remained open — pivoting in the pandemic’s earliest days to provide takeout — the patio tables out front have been the only sitdown option.
But Ofrias told us the chain blocking off the eight stools on the long edge of the counter is coming down, and patrons will be able to eat in again.
“We’re excited to reopen,” he said, sharing the news on Friday while juggling orders before the lunch rush.
The Soda Fountain’s egg sandwiches, BLTs, and shakes make for great takeout. But eating at the counter, with its vintage floor-mounted swivel stools, laminate surface, and view of the constant action at the grill, is one of Shelter Island’s quintessential experiences.
Soloviev — a breakfast regular, along with crews working on renovations of The Chequit right next door — says she’s delighted to welcome back in-person dining.
The counter reopening marks the comeback of yet another longstanding tradition that makes this such a special place to live. Huzzah!
