Friday Night Dialogues: Erin Coughlin on NY in film and TV

Writer and producer Erin Coughlin leads a discussion of New York's role in film and TV at the library's next Friday Night Dialogues, April 1 at 7 PM via Zoom.

At the next Friday Night Dialogues, noted writer and producer Erin Coughlin presents a celebration of New York’s exciting history and role in film and TV.

Join the Shelter Island Public Library for the Zoom talk on Friday, April 1 at 7 PM. Use the library’s online form to register at least 30 minutes before the program start.

New York has played countless starring, if not title, roles from the first film shot on New York streets — “Herald Square” an 1894 “actuality” which recorded events of the day on the sidewalks outside Thomas Edison’s studio — to a recent episode of ”The Gilded Age” and Oscar nominee, “West Side Story.”

Any one of us could name dozens of films and TV shows produced in (or based on) New York. The list goes on and on. Central Park alone holds 532 credits between 1900 and 2020.

Coughlin will cover the history of New York in the industry from the silent film era onward. She’ll discuss the city’s role as a unique setting and as an iconic character on screen. And, how popular TV shows filmed on location in New York have also shaped the city’s role in productions.

She’ll talk about the work and influence of diverse, New York and Long Island filmmakers. Among them, iconic directors Martin Scorsese, Mel Brooks, Woody Allen, Francis Ford Coppola, and groundbreakers Barbra Streisand, Nora Ephron (not to mention her sister Delia and her parents), Sophia Coppola, Ang Lee, Edward Burns, Judd Apatow, Jordan Peele, Todd Philips, and Spike Lee.

Coughlin welcomes questions and comments during what promises to be a shared appreciation of NY film and TV.
