Vigil of Hope on International Overdose Awareness Day

All are welcome to attend a Vigil of Hope on International Overdose Awareness Day.

The event takes place on Thursday, August 31 at 7 PM on the Fiske Field Basketball Courts. Organizers include the Shelter Island Health and Wellness Alliance, the Shelter Island Public Library, HUGS Inc., and the Town of Shelter Island.

The inaugural vigil was held two years ago following the deaths of several East End residents in accidental overdoses of the opioid fentanyl in cocaine. Opiates, specifically fentanyl, have become increasingly widespread.

Inspired by Gina Kraus, whose son Evan died three years ago, the August 31 vigil will feature speakers and music. Organizers will also provide informational literature to educate the community.

Some good news is that publicity generated from these tragic deaths is bringing more funding to harm reduction. For example, in the case of overdoses, money is being spent to distribute Naxolone kits and train emergency first responders and members of the public in their use to reverse the effects of opiates.

The vigil on August 31 provides an opportunity for reflection — remembering losses in our community and around the world — and for the hope for recovery.
