One new case of the novel coronavirus was reported on Shelter Island on January 7, meaning the official cumulative local COVID-19 case count stands at 33.

The rate of infection was reported on the Suffolk County case tracker as 11.82 per thousand residents, still significantly lower than nearby communities and the county generally. East Hampton has the next highest rate of infection at 43.58 cases per 1,000 residents; Islip has the highest for the county at 84.89 cases per thousand.

The official tally does not include about a dozen cases reported to have occurred on Shelter Island since the resurgence began in October (prior to that only nine cases had been reported with the last one in June). Local officials say some cases here may have been reported to the primary address of the individual who was staying on Shelter Island at the time.

Other ‘missed’ cases may be among the 4,000+ cases reported on the county website as Township Unknown. A data collection system at the state reportedly rejected home addresses given as PO Boxes, causing reporting errors for cases in localities that rely on PO Boxes for mail delivery.
