Another 500 shots possible at a second Shelter Island COVID vaccine POD

If all goes as planned, the Town Board says another 500 shots are possible at a second Shelter Island COVID vaccine POD to be held by Stony Brook Southampton Hospital in the school gym on Wednesday, April 7.

Details were still being ironed out, but Superintendent Brian Doelger notified the school community that as part of an effort to ensure the school can remain open for in-person learning, 150 doses of the vaccine would be reserved for parents/guardians. Under NYS guidance, anyone age 30+ can register for the vaccinations.

The school will switch to distance learning for the day, Dr. Doelger said, and for the second dose on May 5, assuming the vaccine provided is the Moderna formula that requires one month between doses.

Town Supervisor Gerry Siller announced the second Shelter Island COVID vaccine point of distribution (POD) at Tuesday’s work session. Details were to be ironed out in a meeting on March 31, and the Town will publicize a registration link as soon as possible on the Town website, he said.

Those who sign up online will not be able to select a time. Instead, after they register, they will receive an appointment by return email. For this reason, anyone interested in registering must have and be able to use an email address.

The registration process will be different than during the first Shelter Island COVID vaccination POD here, when Senior Services provided appointments based on a waitlist of eligible seniors and those with certain qualifying health conditions.

Deputy Supervisor Amber Brach-Williams said the Town does not have the capacity to manage registration by phone, as was done when the focus was on the Island’s most senior and at-risk residents. A majority of that population has been vaccinated, she said, either through the first local POD, or has been provided with support to obtain one at an off-Island location.
