Peek inside the Shelter Island Windmill

Enjoy a peek inside the Shelter Island Windmill when Sylvester Manor hosts a 45-minute tour as part of a summer series exploring the 235-acre property.

The next Windmill Tour takes place on Wednesday, July 7 at 4 PM. Sylvester Manor Executive Director Stephen Sear will lead a group through the newly restored 1810 wind-powered gristmill. You’ll learn about the history of this landmark, designed by millwright Nathaniel Dominy V, where it was built, how it came to Sylvester Manor and how we plan to turn it back into a working mill!

Preservation of the windmill began in 2018 and will be fully complete this summer. The tour will lead you inside the windmill to view the gears, driveshaft and other internal mechanisms of this marvelous wooden machine.

This 45 minute tour will be on dirt paths and inside the windmill, so it’s essential that participants wear appropriate footwear. The tour is recommended for ages 10+. It is not ADA accessible or suitable for anyone with mobility issues.

Meetup is at the Sylvester Manor Farmstand. Tickets are $25 per person; order yours using this Eventbrite link.

The Manor is hosting a series of tours all summer around the themes of History & Heritage, Farming and Sustainability that include two additional looks at the windmill. Find details at sylvestermanor.org/calendar.
