The Shelter Island Historical Society interprets the Island’s past and preserves its heritage for future generations. It hosts exhibitions and programs, and conducts research through extensive archives housed at the Shelter Island History Center. The Garden Club of Shelter Island, founded in 1934, is one of the community’s oldest service organizations. Club members care for Shelter Island’s public gardens — like the plantings at Wilson Circle on Route 114 in the Center — and create decorations for commemorative events — such as the wreaths that mark the war memorials outside the American Legion Hall.
