What’s a war crime? Does the definition apply to recent events in Ukraine? Participants will explore these and other questions during the next Great Decisions discussion on the theme: “US, Russia, and Ukraine.”

It takes place at the Shelter Island Public Library on Thursday, August 17 at 5:30 PM. You can attend in person or via Zoom (register here).

The featured guest is Peter Pettibone, an arbitrator and mediator with over 40 years of international law firm experience. In that capacity, he worked in both Russia and Ukraine. During the library presentation, he’ll share his vast knowledge of the two countries and insights into the current state of affairs.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has resulted in widespread charges of war crimes and calls for justice. But what exactly are war crimes? Opinions of what constitutes a war crime have evolved, as have ways to identify and punish the perpetrators. How will the war crimes committed in Ukraine be dealt with?

About Great Decisions

The Foreign Policy Association created Great Decisions to give ordinary Americans a chance to discuss and debate foreign policy matters. Begun in 1954, it’s now America’s largest discussion program on world affairs.

The program model involves reading the Great Decisions Briefing Book (available at the library) and then meeting to discuss the most critical global issues facing America today.

Great Decisions is one of the most popular programs at the library. And you’ll be amazed at the breadth and depth of experience of our neighbors here on Shelter Island.
