New calendar commemorates Goat Hill’s 120th anniversary

Just in time for the New Year, a calendar featuring vintage postcards and photos of Shelter Island Country Club is available for sale as part of a commemoration of Goat Hill’s 120th anniversary in 2021.

Buy yours for $25 at some retailers around the Island (Stars Café had them when we last checked). Or you can order one by contacting SICC President Gordon Cantley at 631-566-1051. Or, email your request to info@shelterislandcc.org.

Local photographer Eleanor P. Labrozzi assembled the calendar using black and white and hand-colored vintage postcards. Many include the iconic clubhouse set amid hilly Shelter Island Heights terrain. Others show views of or from the 9-hole public course over open landscapes that include far fewer trees than today.

Featured in the month of October is a shot of ladies in long skirts and big hats hitting from a sand trap near the original Dering Harbor clubhouse of the Manhansett Hotel’s golf course (now partly absorbed into the 18-hole private course at Gardiner’s Bay Country Club), a nod to the sport’s early and longstanding popularity here.

About Shelter Island Country Club

The Shelter Island Country Club, known affectionately as “Goat Hill,” is a historic, nine-hole public golf course. The course was established in 1901 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Little has changed in 120 years. The course covers 2,512 yards of widely varying, hilly terrain. These variations keep the course interesting round after round and from season to season.

The clubhouse is situated on one the highest points on the island with scenic views of Peconic Bay and Dering Harbor. In season, golf carts, pull carts and clubs are available for rent. SICC memberships rates start at $500, making Goat Hill one of the most affordable golf memberships on Long Island.
