National Honor Society: Welcomes seven new members and kicks off Souper Bowl of Caring

New NHS inductees (left to right) are Kaitlyn Gulluscio, Mackenzie Speece, James Durran, Sophie Clark, Harper Congdon, Mary Gennari, and Leonardo Dougherty.

The Shelter Island School chapter of the National Honor Society inducted seven new members in a ceremony in the school gym and kicked off our annual Souper Bowl of Caring food drive and fundraiser.

We recorded the January 26 ceremony for those who could not attend in person (see the video on the NFHS network).

We are now 25 members strong in grades 10 to 12. All members pledged to uphold the four pillars — scholarship, leadership, service and character — by which they were selected.

Souper Bowl of Caring food drive and fundraiser

NHS events include the Souper Bowl of Caring Food Drive, through February 11. To participate, drop off shelf-stable donations in the school lobby — please, no expired items or rusty cans! Monetary donations are also welcome.

Below is a list of most needed items.

  • Bulk goods: breakfast cereals, dried fruit and nuts, evaporated or condensed milk (almond or soy milks, too), granola, oatmeal, rice (plain white long grain #2 or larger would be amazing)
  • Canned goods: all veggies (except green beans), beans (dried beans, too)
  • Condiments: BBQ sauce, ketchup, mayo, mustard, salad dressing, salsa, soy sauce, etc.
  • Snacks: all kinds, including granola bars
  • Protein: chicken, peanut butter, tuna, salmon, sardines and SPAM
  • Personal care items: any and all
  • Soups: all, except tomato
  • Staples: cocoa, coffee and tea, instant or microwave meals, meal kits, pasta (regular and gluten-free), pasta sauces, tomato products — including sauce, paste, chopped or whole canned tomatoes (please no mac n’ cheese) — and seasoning mixes

We have two Habitat for Humanity builds coming up in March. Additionally, the NHS will take part in the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s iconic Shamrocks campaign, one of the nation’s largest St. Patrick’s Day fundraisers.
