The Shelter Island Lions Club has announced $12K in new scholarships for two graduating seniors pursuing education beyond high school. These are in addition to the Lions Club’s annual Jack Monaghan scholarship.

The new WE SERVE awards are for high school seniors residing on Shelter Island. For a student seeking:

  • a bachelor’s degree, an $8,000 scholarship will be paid over the recipient’s eight semesters of school
  • an associate’s degree or attending a trade school, apprenticeship, or certification program, a $4,000 scholarship will be dispersed over the program’s duration

The Lions Club will consider an applicant’s character, interests, scholarship needs, a promise of future leadership, and community service.

“All students that have an active ‘WE SERVE’ attitude and lifestyle should apply,” the Lions Club said in a news release.

The Jack Monaghan Award offers $1,000 paid over two years to Shelter Island High School students for further study beyond high school at a college or trade school.

Find the application form for all three scholarships on the Shelter Island Lions Club website.

Students may apply for the Jack Monaghan Award and one or the other WE SERVE scholarships, depending on their higher education plans. Or apply only for the Jack Monaghan Award.

Applications should showcase the student’s commitment to work, community, and service. The application deadline is May 17 at 5 PM.
