Police blotter for January 24 to 30

Seven traffic tickets top the Shelter Island police blotter for January 24 to 30, a quiet week that ended with a walloping blizzard.

Officers stopped and ticketed these drivers as follows:

  • Abdulan Herrera of Shelter Island on Wednesday, January 26around 10:14 AM on Osprey Road for no/insufficient tail lights and failure to stop at a stop sign
  • On Thursday, January 27
    • Joshua J. Conner of Laurel around 7:58 AM on North Ferry Road for visibility distorted by broken glass
    • Paul R. Geenty of West Camp, NY around 9:17 AM on South Ferry Road for operating a motor vehicle while using a portable electronic device
    • James D. Dougherty of Shelter Island around 11:43 AM for an improper or unsafe turn without signal and failure to stop at a stop sign
    • Jeffrey W. Reiter of Shelter Island around 11:59 AM on West Neck Road for driving an uninspected motor vehicle
    • Philip Manuele of Center Moriches around 2:47 PM on North Ferry Road for operating a motor vehicle while using a mobile phone
  • Mark N. Wancer of Brooklyn on Friday, January 28 around 8:47 AM on New York Avenue for speeding 39 mph in a 25-mph zone

Additionally, officers issued three warnings to drivers during traffic stops.

Monday, January 24

Around 3:45 AM, a volunteer Shelter Island Emergency Services Medical team (SIEMS), with the support of an on-call South Ferry crew, transported an aided case to Southampton Hospital.

A Center caller reported an injured deer; the responding officer found the animal, but it ran off into the woods. An officer reported for court duty at Shelter Island Justice Court.

SIPD assisted a driver locked out of a vehicle. A West Neck caller reported seeing what appeared to be a burst pipe on a neighbor’s dock; it was a pump to circulate water to keep it from freezing.

An officer conducted distracted driving enforcement on a Menantic roadway and observed no violations. Officers assisted a person who fell at home but was not injured. An officer on patrol in the Cartwright area saw an injured deer, but it ran off.

Tuesday, January 25

A Center caller reported a sick raccoon; the responding animal control officer (ACO) captured the raccoon and transported it to a vet for humane euthanasia. SIPD interviewed a suspect concerning a previously reported incident.

Wednesday, January 26

An officer instructed DARE lesson 8 to 6th graders at Shelter Island School. SIPD responded to a burglary alarm at a Center residence; the home was secure with no apparent signs of criminal activity.

A caller walked into SIPD headquarters to report a scam attempt; no funds were lost.

Thursday, January 27

Just before 2 AM, a Westmoreland caller reported a carbon monoxide alarm going off. Volunteers from the Shelter Island Fire Department arrived to find smoke alarms had gone off due to smoke from the home’s fireplace.

An officer performed distracted driving enforcement in the Center and issued one ticket (details above). SIPD assisted a driver locked out of a vehicle.

Dispatchers reported a 911 hang-up call; the person had dialed the wrong number. In Longview, a caller reported an alarm beeping; the responding officer found the CO monitor needed replacement.

Friday, January 28

An officer instructed DARE lesson 8 to 6th graders at Shelter Island School. Later, Kindergarten students got a DARE “911” lesson.

A Heights caller reported a sick raccoon; the responding ACO found the animal was dead and disposed of it. A passerby turned in keys found in the Shorewood area.

As the snow began to fall, officers notified the Island’s highway departments of slippery road conditions. Just before midnight, officers performed a well-being check and found the person was safe after a bit of searching.

Saturday, January 29

Around 10:30 AM, an officer escorted a person to the North Ferry. A SIEMS team responded to an aided case; the person refused medical attention.

In the Center, SIPD notified an owner to remove a vehicle parked in a roadway. An officer provided a ride to an individual in the Heights. While on patrol, an officer encountered a disabled car on the side of a Center roadway; the owner said the vehicle had mechanical issued and would be moved as soon as possible.

A Heights caller requested a well-being check; the person was OK. An officer assisted a driver with moving a disabled vehicle into a parking lot. An officer called the Heights Highway Department to plow out a vehicle stuck in a North Ferry Road parking lot.

An officer on patrol notified the Heights Highway Department of snowdrifts blocking Grand Avenue.

Sunday, January 30

A SIEMS team transported an aided case to Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital for further medical assistance.

A passerby reported an open door at a Center residence; the responding officer secured the door, which must’ve blown open during the storm.

A Heights caller reported his disabled vehicle stuck in the snow outside his residence.
