Got a doubles team? Join the library tennis tournament!

The Shelter Island Public Library seeks doubles teams — men, women, and mixed — for a fundraising tennis tournament in August.

Shelter Islanders have supported the library in many ways over the years. Tennis tournaments were a popular fundraising method during the 1960s and 70s. Under the stewardship of Jerry Berner, the library tennis tournament was formalized in 1983 and became the Open Book Tennis Tournament.

This popular event raised money for library programs and materials through the 1990s.

A few years ago, Chuck and Linda Kraus revived the Library Tennis Tournament. On Saturday, August 13 at 8 AM, teams will gather at the Shelter Island School courts for a round-robin tournament.

Teams of women, men, and mixed doubles are encouraged to sign up using this entry form on the library website. The registration fee per team is $250. Sponsors may have their names placed on the commemorative T-shirt for a donation of $100 or more.

The library is grateful to Moussa Dramé Tennis Academy for tennis balls and support services. The Walter Richards Family is kindly sponsoring commemorative T-shirts for the players and supporters. STARS Café is providing breakfast, and The Flying Goat will provide lunch.

For registration and information, visit the tournament page on the library’s website.
