Garden Club 2020 Ornament
Gazette photo | The Garden Club of Shelter Island is selling its 2020 ornament from locations around the Island. Get yours, the 16th in this popular annual series, while supplies last.

We love the Garden Club of Shelter Island’s annual holiday ornaments but are especially fond of the 2020 ornament, as it fits nicely with our “Life Between the Ferries” perspective.

In layers of enameled metal, the Garden Club 2020 ornament depicts a North Ferry vessel and a South Ferry vessel overlaid on a cutout of the Island, surrounded by a looped rope festooned with an anchor and ship’s wheel. It is the 16th ornament in the collection, which celebrates various aspects of life here on Shelter Island.

Typically, Garden Club volunteers sell the ornaments (along with any leftovers from previous years), at various events throughout the summer. But with the pandemic curtailing in-person events, the Garden Club is reaching out with information on how to pick up these holiday favorites while they last.

As usual, they’re available to purchase, $25 each, at the offices of:

  • North Ferry Company, 12 Summerfield Place
  • South Ferry Company, 135 South Ferry Road
  • Shelter Island Historical Society, 16 South Ferry Road
  • Shelter Island Florist, 57 North Ferry Road

You can pick one up at the Saturday Havens Farmers Market before it closes for the season. Or, you can call Garden Club co-president Joan Buonocore to arrange your purchase, 631-749-3367.

About the Garden Club

The Garden Club of Shelter Island, founded in 1934, is one of the community’s oldest service organizations. Club members care for Shelter Island’s public gardens — like the plantings at Wilson Circle on Route 114 in the Center — and create decorations for commemorative events — such as the wreaths that mark the war memorials outside the American Legion Hall.
