County: Covid-19 case connected to Shelter Island – UPDATED

The Suffolk County Executive’s office has notified Shelter Island officials “that a person connected to Shelter Island has tested positive for COVID-19, this being Shelter Island’s first case.”

Shelter Island Police Detective Sergeant Jack H. Thilberg, acting in his capacity as public information coordinator for the Town’s emergency response team, issued a news release Thursday evening. He said word came from the county around 4PM.

The Town of Shelter Island has been updated as to the releasable information related to the person connected to Shelter Island, that had tested positive for the COVID-19. The subject is a 75 year old male, who is admitted and being treated at a hospital.

The Suffolk County Health Department is responsible for investigation and follow-up to determine if any other person(s) may have been in contact with or exposed to the subject and react according to Health Department protocols. ] 

“The Suffolk County Health Department will follow-up with contacts, locations as well as other procedures being followed and determine what steps, if any, are necessary regarding this confirmation,” the statement said.

“The Town expects to be informed as to the gender, age, and if the person is home isolated or under medical care at a hospital,” it said.

Suffolk County 239 confirmed cases

County Executive Steve Bellone said the number of confirmed Suffolk Cases jumped from 160 to 239. He said with increased testing, higher numbers were anticipated. So far 1,500 county residents have been tested, including 250 at the new site at Stony Brook University Hospital.
