Chiefs Secure Victory Over Broncos, Walker Shines in Debut
The Kansas City Chiefs secured a 31-10 victory over the Denver Broncos, with Kenneth Walker III making a significant impact in his debut for the Chiefs. Walker ran for 173 yards and scored two touchdowns, drawing attention away from Patrick Mahomes‘ return to play.
Mahomes, who had undergone surgery for a torn ACL nine months prior, participated in the entire offseason program and training camp. Despite concerns about his left knee, he opened the Chiefs’ scoring with a 15-yard touchdown run. Mahomes played without significant issues, throwing for 184 yards and two scores, in addition to his rushing touchdown. This performance helped the Chiefs end a three-game losing streak against the Broncos, who had previously concluded Kansas City’s nine-year reign as division champions.
Walker’s impactful performance
Walker’s 23 carries resulted in the most rushing yards by a Chiefs player since Jamaal Charles recorded 226 yards in 2012. The former Seahawks star also contributed with three catches for 18 yards. Mahomes acknowledged the offensive line and running backs for setting the tone against the Broncos.
Walker, who was the ex-Seahawks star, had 14 carries for 89 yards in the first half alone. After Mahomes’ initial touchdown, the Broncos tied the game with a 19-yard touchdown pass from Bo Nix to Evan Engram. However, Walker was central to a subsequent 10-play, 80-yard drive that concluded with Mahomes connecting with Rashee Rice for a touchdown, making the score 14-7 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Walker extended the Chiefs’ lead with a 60-yard touchdown run on a fourth-and-one play. Later in the quarter, both teams exchanged field goals. Brandon Jones intercepted Mahomes, leading to a field goal by Wil Lutz for the Broncos. Mahomes then connected with Travis Kelce for 59 yards, setting up a field goal for Harrison Butker.
Broncos’ offensive struggles
The Broncos’ offense struggled in their first game under coordinator Davis Webb. Bo Nix threw for 131 yards, including an interception and a lost fumble. The team finished with a total of 176 yards of offense. This occurred despite their offseason acquisition of wide receiver Jaylen Waddle from Miami in exchange for a package of draft picks.
Waddle managed only one catch for two yards and had a crucial drop on third down. Evan Engram led the Broncos with four catches for 43 yards and scored their only touchdown. The Broncos entered the game without any players carrying an injury designation, while the Chiefs were without starting offensive tackle Josh Simmons due to a back injury and defensive back Chamarri Conner due to a knee injury.
Nix’s fumble in the subsequent possession allowed the Chiefs to solidify their lead. Mahomes found rookie running back Emmett Johnson for a 26-yard gain on third down, setting up a first-and-goal at the Denver 2. In a strategic play, Mahomes lined up in a three-point stance alongside backup quarterback Justin Fields, took the snap, and shoveled the ball to Walker, who scored untouched.
The betting market indicated a tight spread for the game. The total points for the game were set at 43.5. The Chiefs’ victory marked a strong start to their season.
