Chef Noah’s “Preview at The Chequit” opens this weekend utilizing the temporary kitchen off the inn’s newly renovated porch.

The restaurant partners say that diners will get a taste of what’s soon to come at Noah’s new Shelter Island location.

A special preview menu will be available through the fall:

  • Thursdays, Fridays, and Mondays from 5 to 9 PM
  • Saturdays, and Sundays from noon to 9 PM

No reservations are needed this weekend, but you can book for future dates via thechequithotel.com.

“Noah shares my passion for local farming and fishing and bringing my vision to the table,” said Stacy Soloviev, Chequit President, of Noah Schwartz, who runs Noah’s in Greenport with his wife Sunita.

“He does a fantastic job showcasing what this region has to offer,” Soloviev said.
“I know that the North Fork loves his food as much as I do. And now our neighbors on Shelter Island get to experience it.”

The two hosted a soft opening for family and friends over Labor Day weekend. The porch of the historic 1872 inn was festive in its fresh black and white decor as guests sampled the Preview at The Chequit menu.

Eventually, Schwartz and Soloviev plan for The Chequit to house two restaurant spaces. One will seat about 40 guests and offer Asian-style cuisine, like sushi and ramen. The other will seat up to 120 guests and offer more traditional tavern fare.

“American comfort food,” Schwartz said. “Food that is well known to everybody but fancy.”

Since opening in Greenport a decade ago, Schwartz has been consistently recognized for his creative approach to sustainability and farm-to-table dining. And, for his support of agrotourism, local farmers, and organic/biodynamic farming.

“I am quite familiar with Shelter Island and come across often,” he told me when we caught up during the soft opening. “I worked with Sylvester Manor, cater here, and have many clients here.”

Schwartz said he thought about acquiring The Chequit property when it came to auction. But he realized it was beyond his expertise to take on alone. Soloviev is overseeing a full restoration of the iconic inn in the heart of the Shelter Island Heights Historic District.

“I am glad I found the person who was interested in it and that it worked out timing-wise,” Schwartz said. “And that it was sorta kismet or in the stars. I’m very glad that we could work well together and partner.”

The Chequit is undergoing extensive restoration, but the inn’s Summer Cottage, located directly across the street, is open. To book your stay, follow this link.
