Candlelight vigil for International Overdose Awareness Day

All are welcome to attend a candlelight vigil for International Overdose Awareness Day.

The event takes place on Wednesday, August 31 at 7 PM on the Fiske Field Basketball Courts. Organizers include the Shelter Island Health and Wellness Alliance, the Shelter Island Public Library, HUGS Inc., and the Town of Shelter Island.

The inaugural vigil was held last year following the deaths of Swainson Brown and five other East End residents in accidental overdoses of the opioid fentanyl in cocaine.

Opiates, specifically fentanyl, have become increasingly widespread. In New York State, the numbers reflect the national trend. Suffolk County officials reported 415 fatal overdoses in 2021, including 134 deaths that were suspected, but not confirmed as overdoses.

Inspired by Gina Kraus, whose son Evan died two years ago, the August 31 vigil will feature speakers and music. Organizers will also provide informational literature to educate the community.

Some good news is that publicity generated from these tragic deaths is bringing more funding to harm reduction. For example, in the case of overdoses, money is being spent to purchase and distribute naloxone kits and train emergency first responders and members of the public in their use to reverse the effects of opiates.

While being drug-free is truly the safest avenue to preserve life, quick responses from law enforcement, medical personnel, and community members have saved lives.

The vigil on August 31 provides an opportunity for reflection — remembering losses in our community and around the world — and for the hope that these tragedies can someday be behind us.
