2020 Fall 5K beneficiaries

Due to COVID-19, the Shelter Island Fall 5K has moved to a virtual format — meaning participants can run/walk any 5K course and record their time at their convenience.

But the 2020 Fall 5K beneficiaries, with patients and families relying on them for support, don’t have that luxury. Instead, they’re working harder than ever to help East End women facing breast and gynecological cancers.

That means your participation — with its registration fee or donation — is even more meaningful this year than at any time in the event’s 21-year history. Find out how to register or make a donation at shelterislandfall5k.com.

The purpose of the event is to help raise awareness of and funds to fight women’s cancers. All race proceeds support:

North Fork Breast Health Coalition

North Fork Breast Health Coalition is working to encourage and assist in the prevention, early intervention, and cure of breast cancer through advocacy, awareness, networking, and research. The organization says that funds raised go directly to programs such as “Lend a Helping Hand”, which provides grants to patients on the North Fork who are being treated for breast cancer.

“In addition to helping identify the causes of breast cancer, our goal is to educate women about the importance of self-breast exams and annual mammograms as preventive measures,” the coalition says on its website.

While some in-person programs have been suspended due to the pandemic, the coalition continues to offer support services. “Together, supporting each other, we will get through this.”

Coalition for Women’s Cancers at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital

Coalition for Women’s Cancers at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital says it came together to fill the need for a community network in support of women’s cancers.

“The organization focuses on early detection and empowerment to bring about better health care and improved quality of life.”

A peer-to-peer counseling program is available to help reduce the sense of anxiety and isolation a diagnosis may bring. Call 631-726-8715 or sroden@cwcshh.org. You can follow the coalition on Instagram.

Lucia’s Angels

Lucia’s Angels is a nonprofit foundation committed to helping women and families on Eastern Long Island with late-stage breast and gynelogical cancers.

It was created in memory of Lucia Terzi Bagan, who died of breast cancer and wanted other women and their families to have the same love and support through their toughest times that she had through hers.

The organization provides help and funding for elements of care not covered by health insurance.

“From special wishes like one more trip to the beach to providing extra childcare, to the holding of a hand, Lucia’s spirit and Angels will be there.”
