Wrigley Field Hosts Historic College Volleyball Doubleheader
Wrigley Field in Chicago recently hosted a historic college volleyball doubleheader, marking the sport’s debut at the iconic venue. The event served as the finale for the inaugural Big Ten/SEC Volleyball Challenge Week, drawing fans from across the country to witness the matches broadcast on FOX.
The doubleheader featured four teams with notable volleyball traditions. The first match pitted Penn State against Kentucky, followed by a contest between Nebraska and Missouri. This occasion highlighted the growing popularity of women’s college volleyball, which has become a rapidly expanding attraction in college sports.
Historic Venue for College Volleyball
The matches at Wrigley Field represented a significant moment for college volleyball, with the venue transforming from its usual baseball configuration. Fans expressed enthusiasm for the unique setting, noting the historic nature of both the venue and the event itself.
For players, competing on such a national stage offered a distinct experience. Fans also appreciated the opportunity to see their favorite teams play in an unexpected outdoor environment. The event was seen as a further indication of the sport’s continued growth and increasing visibility.
The Big Ten and SEC conferences confirmed that all schools within both conferences participated in the week-long challenge, culminating in the Chicago finale.
Teams and Connections
The first match featured Penn State, ranked No. 13, against Kentucky, ranked No. 3. Penn State entered the game with a 3-0 season record, having secured wins over UConn, High Point, and Hofstra at the Penn State Invitational. Kentucky, with a 4-1 season start, had wins against teams including Wisconsin, Utah State, South Florida, and UCLA, with a loss to Pittsburgh.
Three of the four teams playing at Wrigley Field have collectively won 14 National Championships: Penn State with eight, Nebraska with five, and Kentucky with one. Penn State‘s women’s volleyball program has historical ties to Chicago, including former head coach Russ Rose, who was born and raised in the city. Current head coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley is also a member of the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame.
Several Penn State players also have connections to the Chicago area. Libero Ava Falduto is from Elmhurst, Illinois, and freshman Haley Burgdorf is from St. Charles, Illinois. Both are from communities near Chicago.
The match between Penn State and Kentucky marked the 10th meeting between the two programs, with Penn State leading the all-time series 7-2. The teams have played each other in each of the past two seasons, with Penn State winning one match in five sets and Kentucky winning another in three sets.
Ava Falduto and Caroline Jurevicius are the only current Penn State players who participated in both of the last two matches against Kentucky. Kennedy Martin has also played in four career matches against the Wildcats.
Kentucky was voted first in the SEC Preseason Coaches Poll and is the three-time defending conference champion. Players named to the Preseason All-SEC Team included senior outside hitter Brooklyn DeLeye, junior outside hitter Morgan Gaerte, sophomore setter Kassie O’Brien, and senior libero Molly Tuozzo. These four players were also on the AVCA Player of the Year Preseason Watch List.
The second match of the doubleheader featured Nebraska, the top-ranked team, against Missouri. Fans of both teams were present, with Nebraska supporters noting the large turnout, similar to a previous event in 2023. That year, a Volleyball Day in Nebraska event at Memorial Stadium drew more than 92,000 fans.
Penn State is scheduled to play No. 4 Stanford next in Philadelphia.
