Shelter Island Ambulance Foundation

While the Town of Shelter Island operates the EMS squad and funds its operation, the foundation provides crucial support. Specifically, tax-deductible donations to the foundation fund the rotation of outmoded ambulances for new state-of-art vehicles.

The goal is to retire the oldest the Town’s three ambulances at about age 15 with a new one on a five-year cycle. The Town has ordered a new vehicle. Jack Thilberg, a Shelter Island Police detective sergeant who also manages the EMS program, says he expects delivery later this year.

Shelter Island EMS

If you have a medical emergency on Shelter Island, EMS volunteers drop whatever it is they’re doing and respond. The squad members, their equipment and vehicles connect the Island to vital medical services at hospitals on the North and South forks. In fact, the team responds to about 275 calls for help in a typical year.

The two dozen or more volunteers who comprise the squad at any time take pride in their quick response to emergency calls. They spend hours in training programs designed to improve their capacity to deal effectively with a variety of medical emergencies from allergic reactions to strokes.
