Runners and walkers for the Shelter Island Fall 5K, on your marks, get set, go! The virtual footrace kicks off this Saturday, October 17, with participants able to submit times through October 26.
Registration is underway for the 21st running of the event, which like races everywhere during the pandemic is virtual this year. As always, it benefits women’s cancer care organizations on the East End.
Participants register and then run or walk any 5K course, at their convenience. Then, they submit their times between October 17 to October 26. Each registered participant gets a race bib and the first 300 who sign up get a runner’s buff with the race logo.
Race proceeds go to the North Fork Breast Health Coalition, and to the Coalition for Women’s Cancers at Southampton Hospital. A raffle offers fabulous prizes and supports Lucia’s Angels.
The course record holders are Kal Lewis (16:10.32) and Janelle Kraus (16:33).

Even if you aren’t interested in walking or running, you can still sign up as a donor. And, there’s an option to register just for the 5K raffles, which will feature gift cards as prizes, as well as a 50/50 drawing. Find details on the registration page.
The registration fee for this year’s race is reduced from $35 to $25 for adults. For kids, up to age 14, the fee is $15. The last day to register and post times is October 25.
Those who register after October 16 should allow 24 hours before attempting to post their times. Bib mailing for this event begins October 12; please allow a few business days to receive yours.
