Shelter Island COVID-19 official case count rises to 35

The official COVID-19 case count on Shelter Island rose to 35 Thursday, with one new case reported in the 11965 ZIP code.

Local officials say they know of another dozen or more cases that were not included in the official count, for various reasons.

Meantime, the positivity rate among those tested in Suffolk County remained lower than at the peak of post-holiday spread.

“The trend we saw earlier this week is holding steady, with a positivity rate below 10 percent for the sixth day in a row now here in Suffolk County,” County Executive Steve Bellone said Thursday. “After months of drastic increase, it seems we are finally moving in a positive direction.”

Despite overwhelmed phone and website registration portals for COVID-19 vaccinations, Bellone said “Suffolk County is poised and ready to go. We have an actionable plan and the infrastructure in place to vaccinate at least 6,500 individuals a day — we just simply need the vaccines.”

As of Friday afternoon, the state’s Jones Beach site was fully booked and the Stony Brook University site was taken down after it was revealed that a link to the site was circulated before it was made public. State officials said that none of the appointments reserved prior to the link’s official opening on Friday would be honored. The site had been taken off line by the end of the day.
