Shelter Island Country Club

Shelter Island Country Club, the Island’s only public golf course, is open for the season. Its rocky and hilly terrain have earned it the well-deserved nickname of Goat Hill. At just over 2,500 yards, Goat Hill is perfect for a relaxed 9 holes that won’t take all day.

Shelter Island Country Club golf

A round of golf at Shelter Island Country Club is a return to a simpler time. At Goat Hill the fairways, well they’re not Augusta and they’re not trying to be. The carts well, they’re gas powered and fairly loud but they can climb the steep grade on the 4th hole no problem. And the greens? For the most part they’re pretty tiny and mostly flat, but they roll.

Fussy rules about no jeans or flip flops, or needing a collared shirt? Not at Goat Hill. But don’t kid yourself. Uneven lies and small targets, hard fairways and blind shots make this a tough little track. And you can’t do any better on greens fees anywhere.

After the round you can belly up to the bar of the Flying Goat Restaurant. Or sit on the porch and watch the tee shots from number 1 or the approaches from number 9 as you look over the sumptuous dinner menu. Some of the most pleasant summer breezes anywhere on Shelter Island are on the deck of the clubhouse. Look north and you can see Dering Harbor, look south and in the distance, Shelter Island Sound is stretched out before you.

Shelter Island at it’s best is an unhurried, unpretentious, family friendly place. Moreover, it almost ignores the homogenization of the world beyond the ferries. Shelter Island Country Club epitomizes these qualities. It says, relax.
