Shelter Island School Athletic Director Todd Gulluscio, with a “heavy heart”, notified student athletes Tuesday that spring sports are cancelled in Section XI. He shared the news an email, with a special message for high school seniors.
“This was not an easy decision to make by those who are charged with such a responsibility,” Gulluscio said in an email home to student athletes and their parents/guardians. “I know that we are all holding out hope that something could be salvaged but the health and safety of all is our primary concern.”
“As we all process this decision, I’m sure that there will be questions and a need to find a healthy way to navigate through these difficult times,” he said. “Please know that I am available to answer any questions and you may have both now and in the future.”
Special message for seniors
“To my seniors, I know this is an abrupt ending to your high school athletic career and another opportunity that has been lost in an unprecedented tough time,” Gulluscio said. “Our time in this athletic program started together in 2014 and I can’t begin to tell how grateful I am to have had the opportunity to watch you grow into fantastic athletes and most importantly outstanding young men and women.
“I want to thank you for helping to shape the vision of what has become a very proud program,” he said. “As you know, we pride ourselves on our four core categories: Championship, Citizenship, Scholarship and Sportsmanship. Although we have lost our season, I challenge all of our student-athletes to focus their energy into the core principles of Citizenship and Scholarship.”
“Help your family, do the best job that you can with your grades, continue to exercise in healthy ways and continue to be a force for good. I’m thinking of all of you each day and hope that someday soon we can have the enjoyment of school and athletic events back in our lives. Be well and be safe!”
