Register for Historical Society’s Time Travelers youth program

Chris Fokine is one of four local artists who will lead a session of the Historical Society's Time Travelers youth program. Registration begins April 1 and, as capacity is limited to 10 children per session, the program is likely to fill very quickly.

Registration opens Thursday, April 1 for the Historical Society’s very popular Time Travelers youth program, reimagined to meet pandemic restrictions as a series of three-day or four-day sessions each with a guest artist.

Each of the four sessions is limited to 10 children only. They run from Tuesday to Thursday (unless otherwise noted), 9 AM to noon. The cost per session is $200 and children may be enrolled in multiple sessions as follows:

  1. HOW? Antique Tools & Woodworking with Chris Fokine, July 27 to July 29, for ages 6 to 11. Chris will introduce the children to his amazing collection of historic tools and show them how these tools can be used to transform a simple piece of wood into something structural, magnificent, and useful. Children will learn to use a variety of tools and practice some simple woodworking techniques. Their experience will culminate in the creation of their very own woodworking project! Click here to learn more about Chris Fokine.
  2. WHY? Philosophy for Children through Fairy Tales with Wendy Turgeon, August 3 to August 5, for ages 6 to 11. Wendy will focus on storytelling through select fairy tales. Children will enjoy exploring fairy tales by thinking of the big ideas. These explorations will be followed by a structured break with games and art activities that invite them to imagine “far away and long ago.” Discussions, role playing, and activities will give children the chance to explore their sense of wonder and puzzlement about the world, develop their skills of inquiry, creative thinking, and natural curiosity. Click here to learn about Wendy Turgeon.
  3. IMAGINE! Fantasy Papier Mache Sculptures with Stephanie Lebowitz, Monday, August 9 to Thursday, August 12 (this session is four days long), for ages 8 to 11. Stephanie will work with children to design and create their own imaginary creature, person, or “thing” using a variety of materials and papier mache. Click here to learn about Stephanie Lebowitz.
  4. CREATE! Puppeteering with Liz Joyce of Goat on a Boat Puppet Theatre, August 17 to 19, for ages 56 to 11. Liz will take kids on an imaginary underwater adventure to create environments, puppet creatures, and stories about the sea. From the exploration of different types of puppetry, to the creation of background scenery, to the writing of script–to the creation of their own puppets, to handling the puppets and making them come alive, children will experience the different creative stages of producing a puppet show. Click here to learn about Liz Joyce.

Since only 10 children may be registered for each session, the program is likely to reach capacity very quickly. To sign up starting April 1, visit shelterislandhistorical.org/timetravelers2021.

Face coverings will be required for all staff, artists, and children, and social distancing will be maintained. If you cancel your registration within two weeks of your registered session, no refund will be given.
