Fun and educational activities for little ones at the Shelter Island Public Library

Bubble Hour under the library's tent is just one of events planned for little ones in May.

Parents and caregivers always look for fun and educational activities to share with their little ones. Luckily, the Shelter Island Public Library has a variety of early childhood programs to keep children engaged and entertained. 

Here are some events in May that you won’t want to miss (follow this link to the library’s online calendar to register):

  1. Sensory Hour, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10:30 AM This is an excellent opportunity for infants and children up to age 5 to explore and learn through play. The library provides developmental toys for children to play with and interact with other kids their age. Plus, there’s coffee for the grown-ups!
  2. Story Time, Saturdays at 10:30 AM (except May 13) Children ages 2-5 will enjoy listening to new and old favorite books while developing their literacy skills.
  3. Play-Doh Play, Saturday, May 6, at 11:30 AM Little ones can get creative with Play-Doh and make wacky and wild creations, encouraging their imaginations and developing fine motor skills.
  4. Rainy Day Ducks kit, pickup May 9 to May 13 Make adorable little ducks with a kit that’s perfect for a rainy day and is guaranteed to give children a quackin’ good time.
  5. Carrots in the Garden kit, pickup May 16 to May 20 A cute paper craft that introduces little ones to the joys of gardening and encourages them to learn about nature.
  6. Birdhouse Painting, Saturday, May 20, at 11:30 AM Children create birdhouses to keep as decorations or to provide shelter for backyard birds. This fun activity promotes creativity and appreciation for nature.
  7. Bubble Hour, Saturday, May 27, at 11:30 AM Weather permitting, the library will provide an outdoor bubble hour. Wee ones love playing with the library’s bubble machines and wands while enjoying the fresh air.

About the library

The Shelter Island Public Library is open Monday to Saturday from 9:30 AM to 7 PM (until 5 PM on Saturday).

Sara Garcia leads the Youth Services division, located on the lower level, curating resources, programs, and events aimed a three age groups: early childhood (up to age 5), children (ages 6 to 10), and tweens/teens (10+).
