Police blotter for September 28 to October 4

An accident and two tickets top the Shelter Island police blotter for September 28 to October 4.

[Editor’s note: This post was updated on July 11, 2022 to remove information about a case that resulted in dismissed charges]

Kimberly Ann O’Brien of Sagaponack told SIPD she was stopped behind another vehicle on Marwaring Road at St. Mary’s Road circle when her car rolled into the one ahead of it owned by Carl G. Waters of Westbrook, CT. That caused Waters’ bike rack to push into his trunk, damaging both the rack and trunk. The repair estimate exceeds $1,000.

Police officers stopped and ticketed these drivers as follows:

  • Jeffrey D. Rogers of Orient on Friday, October 1 around 9:43 PM on Manwaring Road for failure to stop at a stop sign
  • Rebecca L. Jacino of East Moriches on Monday, October 4 around 1:13 PM on North Cartwright Road for speeding 54 miles per hour in a 35-mph zone

In addition, officers issued two verbal warnings to drivers during traffic stops.

Tuesday, September 28

A Silver Beach caller complained about an illegally anchored boat; the responding officer contacted the boat owner, who said issues with the trailer prevented removing the vessel before the end of the week.

In Hay Beach, a caller reported a sick raccoon in the middle of a road; the responding Animal Control Officer (ACO) captured and transported it to a vet for humane euthanasia.

An officer performed radar enforcement in the Center and observed no violations. In South Ferry Hills, a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm sounded; the volunteer Shelter Island Fire Department (SIFD) responded and determined a false alarm due to a faulty detector.

A living room motion detector triggered a burglary alarm; the responding officer searched the exterior and found all doors and windows secure. Officers assisted with providing a funeral escort.

A volunteer Shelter Island Emergency Medical Services team (SIEMS) evaluated and transported an aided case to Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital (SB/ELIH) for medical assessment.

Around 8 PM, a caller asked SIPD to investigate a report that a person obtained an indecent photograph of a victim and disseminated it to others.

Wednesday, September 29

SIPD reported the death of an individual after a long illness and notified the Shelter Island Funeral Home.

An officer performed distracted driving enforcement in the Center and observed no violations.

Thursday, September 30

Around 1:20 AM, SIEMS transported an aided case to SB/ELIH. Later that morning, a West Neck caller reported a sick raccoon; the ACO captured and transported it to a vet for humane euthanasia.

A Heights caller reported giving access to his computer to unknown people who stated they were employed to rectify a software issue. The caller said he was not currently at a monetary loss in describing the possible scam. However, SIPD advised him to check all credit reports.

A Center caller reported a box truck traveling at a high rate of speed through a school zone. The responding officer spoke with a dispatcher who said he would talk with his drivers.

A burglary alarm sounded at a Center office; SPID found the building secure. The front door alarm at a Menantic residence went off; the responding officer notified the owner there was no sign of criminal activity.

Friday, October 1

Officers completed re-certification training for the Intoxilyzer 9000 device. Suspicious of tracks in the grass and political signs laying on the ground, a Center caller reported to the police. The responding officer determined the tracks were from a lawnmower, and there was no damage to the lawn or signs.

A St. Mary’s Road caller requested extra radar patrols there. SIPD was investigating a harassment complaint. On Ram Island, smoke from a burnt chicken dinner triggered an automated alarm.

A Heights caller reported a dog bite; the responding ACO confirmed the incident with the dog’s owner and notified the Suffolk County Department of Health Services.

Saturday, October 2

An officer conducted stationary and patrolling distracted driving enforcement in the West Neck area and observed no violations.

Concerned that a person may have drowned, a Shorewood caller told SIPD a neighbor’s dog was barking at the water. The responding officer contacted the homeowner, who said she was out sailing but would return shortly. The officer put the dog in the house.

A caller phoned SIPD to report that he believes that a person is speaking unkindly about him to others. The responding officer told him these actions do not constitute criminal harassment.

Officers assisted with directing traffic and parking for the Lions Club Thank You party at Wades Beach.

A Dering Harbor caller complained of loud music but couldn’t pinpoint the source; the responding officer said it might be coming from a wedding reception. The caller retracted the complaint.

Sunday, October 3

SIEMS responded to an aided case; the person refused medical attention.

In Montclair, a caller reported dogs at large; they’d gone home when the ACO arrived.

Unable to assist a caller who’d locked his keys in the trunk, an officer suggested he call the manufacturer’s roadside assistance service.

Monday, October 4

Prompted by a noise complaint just after midnight, an officer notified organizers of a loud party to lower the volume, and they did.

A faulty sensor was blamed for an automated alarm that called out the SIFD at 3 AM to a Silver Beach residence.

In the Menantic area, a caller reported a possible door left open; the responding officer found everything secure and advised the caller to use 911 to inform rather than leaving a message on the non-emergency voicemail.

SIPD officers covered AM/PM school crossing duty. An officer completed the 3rd quarter filing for the state’s Sexual Offense Evidence Kit. An officer attended Shelter Island Justice Court at the court’s request.

According to a caller, bonfire partiers at Hay Beach left behind broken glass and other debris. The responding officer contacted one of the organizers, who said they’d cleaned up that morning and were on their way back to the beach to retrieve firewood. However, the officer said no glass is allowed on the beach, and in the future, they must clear all garbage before departing.

SIPD secured two large boxes of prescription medication for disposal and locked them in the squad’s evidence room. A Center caller reported a missing license plate.
