Police blotter for April 21 to 27

The driver of an ATV was issued a summons for exceeding limitations on use of the vehicle, according to a report in the police blotter for April 21 to 27.

Zachery T. Renault of Shelter Island, owner of a 2020 Yamaha ATV, was ticketed for an offense that occurred April 11, according to the summons that was included in this week’s police blotter.

An officer patrolling early on April 24 observed circular vehicle tracks in a Westmoreland field and took photographs of the resulting damage to the grass and landscape to document possible criminal mischief.

Around 10PM that night, an officer following up on the earlier incident observed a vehicle fishtailing on Shell Beach and issued a verbal warning to the driver for unauthorized lights. The later blotter report made reference to the earlier incident; as did two additional blotter reports for unspecified traffic stops on April 27.

Tuesday, April 21

A panic alarm called police to a Longview residence around 11AM; the owner said it had been activated by accident. A Center caller reported receiving harassing phone calls.

A caller reported finding a dinghy washed up on Silver Beach; there was no permit on the vessel and the responding officer arranged with the Highway Department to tow it to the impound yard.

A fire alarm sounded at a Dering Harbor home around 6PM; the owner reported having trouble with the system.

Wednesday, April 22

Shelter Island Emergency Medical Services (SIEMS) volunteers assisted police in responding to a request from a homeowner having trouble with a stairway chair. The responding officers advised Shelter Island Senior Center of support needed for the individual’s transition to first floor living arrangements.

Officers assisted a person who required governmental verification for international paperwork. A Heights caller reported a possible phishing scam. On Silver Beach, a dog that got loose was returned to its owner.

An officer issued verbal warnings to a driver in Center traffic stop.

A caller reported a person selling T-shirts from a sidewalk stand in the Heights, in apparent violation of New York State executive orders closing all but essential businesses. The person was gone by the time the officer arrived, but a flyer provided contact information. The officer contacted the seller and told her she cannot sell T-shirts in a public space, and advised her to instead use the internet and social media.

Around 10PM, an officer assisted a Longview resident in locating and removing an alarm that was sounding due to a low battery, advising the person to contact the Senior Center for help replacing the unit.

SIEMS volunteers responded to an aided case; medical transport was not required.

Thursday, April 23

A caller reported that a sign recommending COVID-19 safety precautions had been removed from the front door of the Heights Post Office. The responding officer spoke with the postmaster who said the sign, which had been placed on the front door in violation of federal regulations, had been moved to a visible location within the building.

An officer fingerprinted a person for employment purposes. A Center caller found an iPhone; it was returned to its owner. A business owner requested additional patrols. In response to a report of an emotionally disturbed person, officers took a person into to custody for evaluation at a medical facility.

Friday, April 24

A Cartwright caller reported a dog at large had entered her property and went after her smaller dog, but caused no injury. The responding officer contacted the owner of the larger dog who promised to keep his dog contained.

Stephen J. Cummings of Shelter Island was stopped on South Ferry Road around 2PM and ticketed for operating a motorcycle with insufficient lights/no horn, and for operating out of class.

A Center caller reported finding a dog; before the responding officer arrived, the owner retrieved the dog.

Saturday, April 25

A Center caller reported multiple vehicles parked along Route 114 near Mashomack Preserve; the responding officer found the preserve parking lot was full and the vehicles were parked legally.

An officer assisted a person who’d fallen but was not injured. A Center caller reported that a group of people playing tennis were not practicing social distancing or wearing mask. The responding officer arrived and observed a family getting into a van and leaving the area.

In the Heights, a caller reported finding a dog; the owner arrived and retrieved it. In Hay Beach, a caller reported landscapers working in possible violation of the state’s stay at home order. The responding officer observed no violations.

Sunday, April 26

A Westmoreland caller reported finding a dead fox; the responding officer disposed of the animal.

Monday, April 27

At police headquarters, a person turned in a pellet gun to be destroyed.

In the Heights, a caller reported observing a person walking in and out of a business yelling and appearing agitated. The responding officer said the man told him he’d been on his cell phone (while wearing noise cancelling headphones) talking with his credit card company because his card was declined. The officer advised him to lower his voice.
