NYS ‘BOW in the Snow’ registration

Learn outdoor skills alongside other women during BOW in the Snow, a three-day workshop in February sponsored by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.

Registration opens Tuesday for New York State’s BOW in the Snow, a program in February designed to teach women outdoor skills. The three-day program takes place in Allegany State Park in Salamanca with registration by lottery.

BOW (Becoming an Outdoors-Woman) and Beyond BOW are programs that provide women with information, encouragement, and hands-on instruction in outdoor skills. You can find out more about BOW on the state Department of Environmental Conservation website.

The 2022 BOW in the Snow program takes place February 4 through 6 at Camp Allegany and is open to women age 18+. The cost is $295. The package includes six meals, two nights lodging, instruction in three classes, use of equipment, materials, and transportation to class locations. Space is limited to 40 participants, and a lottery will determine places.

You must register for the lottery no later than December 14. First, complete the form on the BOW registration page. If your name is selected, you’ll have 48 hours to complete your payment and secure your registration.

According to the DEC program description, Camp Allegany has dormitory-style lodging with four to five persons in a room with shared bathrooms. The beds are all single beds (no bunks). Newly installed heating in each room provides a warm stay. Classes for this workshop include fat tire biking, K-9 first aid, waterfowl id, firearms safety, ice fishing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, wild game cooking & cuts, map & compass, food preservation, winter wellness, soap making, Dutch oven cooking, and more!

COVID-19 safety protocols will be in place. Snow and cold temperatures are part of the experience, but extreme weather may cause cancellation, with partial refunds provided.
