The Shelter Island School chapter of the National Honor Society is gathering items in good condition for reuse. This is part of a fundraising drive in collaboration with Savers. The goal is to raise $500 to contribute to good causes, like the American Cancer Society.

“You can help by donating bags of clothing — any size or season — and household items in boxes,” the NHS says. “Please new or gently used — nothing stained, ripped, or broken.”

Savers, based in San Francisco, is a for-profit thrift store chain that relies on local charities to recycle reusable items. With stores throughout the U.S., Canada, and Australia, it annually keeps 700 million pounds of reusable items from landfills.

Shelter Island NHS is running what Savers calls a FUNDrive. The goal is to collect 139 bags of clothing and 38 medium boxes of household goods. In exchange, Savers will donate $500 to the NHS. The NHS will forward the funds to good causes.

Upcoming collection dates in the school parking lot are:

  • Friday, April 23 from 2:30 to 4:30 PM
  • Friday, April 30 from 2:30 to 4:30 PM
