Mimi Page Jewelry

An idea in the works for many years, Mimi Page Jewelry started with a grandmother who collected tin photographs in a book, dreamed of somehow turning them into art and jewelry but never got around to it.

“I inherited the book,” Mimi said.

She took images from her grandmother’s collection and was inspired to wrap them in silver, add a chain and wear them as a necklace.

The idea came easily to this long-time artist, who was accepted to the School for the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston but deferred in order to move to Shelter Island to renovate and design a home.

Finding treasure or an ordinary stone on the beach, that most would overlook, became her passion after moving here. She turned her beach finds into jewelry.

“My inspiration comes from everywhere and anywhere — a stone on the beach, an architectural detail and from just pushing materials around on my bench”, Mimi told me during a recent phone interview.

What excites you most about re-opening?

“I am looking forward to opening the studio for regular weekend hours, I gave the space a refresh and also look forward to interacting in the space and with the people,” she said. “Especially those whose jaws drop open when they see it, those who are surprised not knowing what to expect.”

The space they don’t expect is a 1974 Argosy Airstream, a dream purchase made back in 2014. Mimi re-designed the Airstream, later named Go-Go with the ESK Production Company.

“Customizing the space to become my studio would not have been possible without ESK Production and now she’s part of the experience,” she said referring to Go-Go.

Favorite part of making jewelry?

“I love stringing the moments together from finding the special stone on the beach, bringing it into the studio, creating the piece, and then watching it walk out the door around someone’s neck.”

What holds you back?

“Finding time for creativity, it can be a total crapshoot — you never know what kind of day you’ll have in the studio,” she said. “It can be your mindset or a million other distractions.”

Mimi is a full-time caretaker of her 4-year-son with her husband, Matej Zlatkovic. She’s also head of the household while he works countless hours as a tennis instructor.
