Listen to Life Between the Ferries, a new podcast about Shelter Island, its people, places and history. For our inaugural episode, we sat down the Jimbo Theinert to talk about plans to expand Strongpoint Theinert Ranch, a cause generously embraced by Islanders who remember his brother Joe.

“If you’re from Shelter Island, the Theinert name needs no introduction. If you’ve ever visited the Island, you’ve probably heard it. You have may arrived here onboard a South Ferry vessel name the Lt. Joe Theinert. Or perhaps you’ve driven along Route 114, the main road across the Island, which has been named in honor of the fallen soldier.
“U.S. Army 1st Lt. Joseph J. Theinert was 24 when he was killed in action during Operation Enduring Freedom on June 4, 2010. To honor him, his family has established the Strongpoint Theinert Ranch in Magadalena, New Mexico. The ranch hosts retreats for veterans and Gold Star families, free of charge.
“Right now, guests are housed in the family’s 3-bedroom ranch home, but a campaign is underway to build a bunkhouse. Joey’s brother Jimbo Theinert recently sat down with us to talk about the project, what’s been done so far and what’s needed to complete the job.”
Please visit the Strongpoint Theinert Ranch website to learn more about the work being done there to help veterans.
