Join us in saying “Thank You!” during National EMS Week. If you’ve ever had a reason to express gratitude to Emergency Medical Services personnel, it’s likely because you’ve had a close encounter with them during a crisis. Their presence and expertise can mean the difference between life and death in those critical moments.

Having had one such encounter not long ago, I will be forever grateful to the team that showed up at my door late on a February evening to take me by ambulance to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital (find details in my post “Pardon Our Technical Difficulties“).

But after swooping into our lives during emergencies and rendering vital aid, EMS personnel move on to the next call. As a result, we may not always have the opportunity to thank them personally. That’s why it’s vital that we collectively acknowledge those who selflessly serve our community.

National EMS Week

One way to express gratitude is by participating in the celebration of National EMS Week, held this year from May 21 to 27. This special week was established by President Gerald Ford in 1974 to recognize and appreciate the contributions of EMS practitioners across the country. It brings together local communities and medical personnel to honor the dedication of those who provide the day-to-day lifesaving services of medicine’s frontline.

Here are a few suggestions on how we all can show our appreciation:

  • Say Thank You: If you encounter EMS personnel during an emergency, make sure to express your gratitude personally; sending a simple “thank you” can go a long way in acknowledging their hard work and dedication (find contact details on the Town EMS webpage)
  • Volunteer and Donate: Consider volunteering your time or donating to our local EMS squad; or support the Shelter Island Ambulance Foundation, which provides funds beyond those available in the Town budget for state-of-the-art equipment and training
  • Spread Awareness: Educate yourself and others about the importance of EMS services here; give a shout-out on social media to our EMS volunteers

Our EMS team — Island volunteers and the Stony Brook paramedics and other medical personnel at local hospitals who work with them — save lives when every second counts. Their dedication and expertise profoundly impact individuals, families, and, by extension, our entire community.

Let’s all express our thanks and ensure they receive the appreciation and support they truly deserve.
