SIFM: Boyd Meets Girl in a free concert

Shelter Island Friends of Music hosts the popular, much-streamed duo Boyd Meets Girl, featuring Rupert Boyd on guitar and Laura Metcalf on cello, in a free concert Sunday, May 28, at 7 PM at the Shelter Island Presbyterian Church.

The program will feature the works of Schubert, Villa-Lobos, Debussy, Lennon/McCartney, Bach, Messiaen, and others. A reception with the musicians follows the concert. While admission is free, donations are appreciated.

Boyd Meets Girl

Australian-born Boyd is a classically trained guitarist. Metcalf, who grew up in Connecticut, is a sought-after chamber musician and collaborator, drawn to projects that “push boundaries and expand the definition of classical chamber music.”

The married couple has two studio albums streamed over 3 million times on Spotify alone. Gramophone praised their music, saying, “They play like one, with a harmony of purpose as sure as their intonation.”

They tour worldwide, and in the US, they’ve appeared at Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts in Westchester County, Festival Napa Valley, the Morgan Library, Moab Music Festival, and Newport Classical, among other venues.

Boyd and Metcalf arrange much of their repertoire, drawing inspiration from artists across genres. They talk about the music from the stage, creating a conversational concert experience that breaks down boundaries between musical genres and musician and audience.

They are the artistic directors of the Sunday morning concert series, GatherNYC. On the morning of the Shelter Island concert, the duo will join the New York Philharmonic members for the GatherNYC season finale.

Based in New York City, Boyd and Metcalf have Shelter Island ties. They came for a “mini-moon” to unwind after their September 2015 wedding.

“We have amazing memories of lazy days spent wandering the island, lying on the beach, playing mini-golf and enjoying the brewery,” Laura said. “It was such a relaxed and wonderful time.”

Their 4-year-old son, Milo — “an intrepid traveler and always up for an adventure” — will accompany them to Shelter Island on Memorial Day weekend.

Third free concert in SIFM’s 46th season

This will be Metcalf’s second appearance with SIFM; she performed with a cello quartet in October 2019 and had “a truly wonderful time.” So did the audience.

This is the third concert of the SIFM’s 46th season. Visit www.shelterislandfriendsofmusic.org for more information.
