Camp Quinipet summer 2022 registration begins New Year’s Day

Camp Quinipet summer 2022 registration begins on New Year’s Day, with discounted rates if you sign up by January 31.

Quinipet has been serving campers and families since 1947. It offers eight week-long overnight and day camp sessions and a popular sailing program as a stand-alone or combined with the other programs.

“Whether you come for one week or all eight, you will make long-lasting friendships, laugh a LOT, and enjoy the beautiful natural environment of Shelter Island,” the camp says on its website. “Our goal is for children to feel welcome, to try new things, and to deepen their spiritual values. Quinipet has all the fun of a traditional Christian summer camp surrounded by water.”

Overnight campers choose electives for the week, tailoring their activity schedule and meeting new friends. Campers also enjoy cabin time — less structured time spent with bunkmates, such as campfires with s’mores. Quinipet houses campers by age and gender.

The overnight programs run from Sunday to Saturday, and campers staying consecutive weeks must be picked up Saturday morning. However, they can check-in through an expedited line on Sunday afternoon. The day sessions run from Monday to Friday, with morning or afternoon options.

Like other sleepaway camps in New York, Quinipet is licensed by the Department of Health with strict standards that conservatively reflect health guidelines during the pandemic.

If you are not already a Quinipet family, follow this link to complete a “New Family Inquiry.”

Van pickup at Shelter Island’s North Ferry

For day campers only, Quinipet camp staff will meet families by the Carousel in Greenport promptly at 8:30 AM and “walk across” with campers aboard a North Ferry vessel. Quinipet staff and campers will travel by camp van to Quinipet for the day. Campers and staff will meet parents back at the Carousel in Greenport at 4:20 PM.

Transportation is available for children that do not need a car seat. The cost is $50 per camper/week. Space is limited, and advance registration is a must!

Open house days

Quinipet hosts open house days to get to know the camp. For 2022, they’re scheduled for 1 to 4 PM on Saturday, March 19, Saturday, April 23, and Saturday, May 14.

First-time campers may attend a special open house just for them on Saturday, June 24, from 2 to 4 PM.

Health and safety standards

Quinipet Camp & Retreat Center works with other camp professionals to share best practices about operating safely, the camp says. The American Camp Association collaborates with experts from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Red Cross, and other youth-serving agencies to assure research-based best practices. As an accredited camp, Qunipet undergoes ACA’s comprehensive review of its operations, from staff qualifications to emergency management, the camp says.

In addition to ACA accreditation, Quinipet meets New York State Department of Health Children’s Camp requirements. Quinipet has a Registered Nurse on-site in the camp Health Center. For care requiring a physician, Qunipet uses the Shelter Island Family Medical Health Clinic and Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital.

Scholarships

The Quinipet Scholarship Fund assists families in need. To apply, complete this Scholarship Application and submit it by April 15, 2022. Recipients will be notified by mid-May. About Camp Quinipet

The camp, founded and operated by the Methodist Church, takes its name from the five large boulders (roughly, in Latin quinque petra) at the property’s shoreline. The camp’s iconic gazebo sits atop the most prominent rock.

“Quinipet is built upon the rocks of faith, courage, love, humility, and honesty,” the camp’s website says. This creates “a foundation that welcomes campers from all walks of life, faith, and church affiliation.”
