Better World Book Club on ‘White Fragility’

With the Black Lives Matter movement on everyone’s mind, the Better World Book Club says the bestseller “White Fragility” by Robin DiAngelo is now “an even more important read”.

The club first chose the book before the pandemic but had to cancel the discussion. It plans to host an in-person conversation this Thursday, July 23 at 3 PM in Fellowship Hall at the Shelter Island Presbyterian Church. This meeting is open to all.

The book, which was published in 2018 and has soared to the top of the New York Times bestseller list, discusses racial biases ingrained in our society and the job of white people to confront it.

Lynn Franklin, one of the coordinators of the event, says that the club was inspired by the recent Black Lives Matter demonstration on Shelter Island.

“This movement shouldn’t die down,” she said.

Windows will be open and fans will be on to circulate the air, however there will be no air conditioning. The book club asks that attendees wear masks and bring their own chairs to assure the utmost protection for everyone.
