Town: Hurricane Henri advisory

Shelter Island Town Supervisor Gerry Siller has declared a State of Emergency commencing Sunday, August 22 at 6 AM due to Hurricane Henri.

A hurricane warning has been issued for our community with impacts starting as early as overnight tonight. The storm is anticipated to make landfall in East Hampton Town Sunday afternoon.

The main threats from Henri are potentially life-threatening winds, storm surge and heavy rain capable of producing flash flooding. Sustained winds, of approximately 60 mph with wind gusts up to 75 mph, are anticipated on Sunday from 2 to 8 PM with tropical winds in the four hours before and after.

All roads will be closed except to emergency vehicles between 6 AM Sunday and 6AM Monday, August 23. Residents are further advised that ferry services may be limited or unavailable during this time period.

Additionally, a voluntary evacuation of Ram Island and other low-lying coastal areas is requested. A storm surge is anticipated to flood the Ram Island causeway preventing emergency access. Residents are encouraged to seek shelter at family or friend’s homes during the storm from early Sunday morning through Monday morning or until the storm passes.

Should this not be possible, please call the Shelter Island Police Department non-emergency number, 631-749-0600, to arrange for other means of sheltering.
