Town Board OKs summer businesses on beaches

During a special meeting Tuesday, the Town Board issued licenses allowing summer businesses on beaches for food trucks, massage tents, kayak and standup paddleboard rentals, and a launch service.

The eight licenses — for businesses on Town property at Crescent and Wades beaches and the Burns Road landing — are pending signed contracts and payment of the $250 permit application fees.

Businesses requiring other federal, state, or county permits must obtain them before engaging in operations. In addition, all must obtain certificates of insurance liability to the satisfaction of the Town’s broker.

Locations may be subject to review by the SIPD or Highway Department. All permittees must remove trash daily and not place it in the Town’s beach receptacles.

Except as specified, business owners aren’t guaranteed parking spaces and may not cone-off spaces at any time. And, like everyone else parking in Town-regulated areas, they have to obtain parking permits.

At Crescent Beach

The Town Board approved six businesses to operate at Crescent Beach:

  • Crow’s Nest Bar & Grill, to run a food truck in a designated parking space just east of the Town gazebo
  • Bon Spa (Alexson Roy) to provide therapeutic massage from a 20-by-20-foot area on Crescent Beach with two 10-by-10-foot tents and a storage locker to keep related gear
  • Venture Out (Matthew Stromberg) to rent standup paddleboards and kayaks from a 20-by-20-foot area on Crescent Beach, including a 10-by-10-foot tent and adjacent storage locker to keep related gear (he can cone-off a parking space for no more than 10 minutes)
  • Ride Shore LLC (John Eicher and David Witzke) to operate a launch service from a 10-by-10-foot tent on the east end of the beach
  • Karen Garcia Springer to sell pre-packed organic drinks, Kombucha, bottled water, and organic ice-pops out of her Volkswagen van (but no clothing or other retail items); she must park within the 20-westernmost diagonal Town permit spaces
  • Mehmet Cevher must park his Mister Softee truck at the far western end of Crescent Beach, staying within the parallel spaces

At Wades Beach

Another food truck will operate a Wades Beach, where the two roaming cold snack providers will also be allowed.

  • Stars Cafe (Lydia and Pepe Martinez) to run a food truck parked in the paved area north of the public restrooms adjacent to the large bocce courts
  • Springer must park her van in that area when visiting the beach
  • Cevher must park his Mister Softee truck on the west side of the Wades Beach parking lot

At Burns Road

The eighth permit is for a kayak rental company to put in equipment for tours of the popular Coecles Harbor Marine Water Trail:

  • Kayak Shelter Island LLC (Adam Mills) to provide tours from the Town’s Burns Road landing

While the other businesses are limited to daytime hours (9 AM to 7 PM in most cases), there is no limit on Ride Shore hours, given the nature of the business. The permits have different start dates in May and June; most end by mid-September. To find details, follow this link to the resolutions (scroll down to the second page).

After the March 31 application deadline, the Town Board reviewed permit applications during spring work sessions. Supervisor Gerry Siller said after enacting some policy guidelines, the board may hand over the vetting process next year to the Town Clerk’s office.
