Update from County Executive

County Executive Steve Bellone went to Stony Brook University on Sunday and visited a field hospital under construction on a soccer field beside the school’s stadium, and thanked those working there on a holiday.

“I thanked them for being a part of this battle to save people’s lives,” Bellone said, adding that he hopes the overflow beds are never needed.

There was a glimmer of good news in the number of hospitalizations.

“This is the number that says where we are headed,” Bellone said. In the week prior, there was an average daily increase of 144 new COVID-19 admissions. On Sunday, for the first time, the number of all those hospitalized decreased — by 44.

NOTE: There is a lag in reporting and some of those in Township Not Known may eventually be added to each township’s tally. The counts do not include people who are currently living in Suffolk County, but who have their primary address elsewhere.

*The Town of Shelter Island announced last week that the two individuals residing here confirmed to have COVID-19 had died while hospitalized. A third case was added that Island officials said was a health care worker who tested positive, but had since recovered. Two new cases were added last week.
