Student work on display at Parrish Art Museum

Shelter Island student work is on display at the Parrish Art Museum through April. Students and their families can attend the annual East End Student Exhibition for free.

Shelter Island School has two collaborative works from students in grades PK-3 through 8. Also on display are individual works by high school students: Alexandra Burns, Harper Congdon, Hayden Davidson, Myla Dougherty, Mary Gennari, Johanna Kaasik, Andrea Napoles, Jeremy Sabatel, Margaret Schultheis, Steven Pacheco Silverio, Annabella Springer, Madison Springer, Madigan Teodoru, and Harrison Weslek.

Dougherty was selected for the Senior Awards of Excellence for Mixed Media.

Two Islanders speak at PechaKucha Night

Schulteis, along with art teacher Catherine Brigham, presented the work of Island students to a live and digital audience on March 25. They joined other high school students and art educators in presenting artwork during a PechaKucha Night.

Named for the sound of “chit-chat” in Japanese, the format of PechaKucha is simple: each invited presenter gets 20 images with 20 seconds per image to talk about living creatively.

Here is a video of the evening (Brigham’s presentation begins at the 6:46 minute mark, and Schulteis follows).

About the presenters

Brigham teaches art to students in 15 grade levels at the Shelter Island School who range in age from 3 to 19. Brigham earned an undergraduate degree in Art and Design in Education from Pratt Institute and a Master’s in Teaching Students with Disabilities from Long Island University. She lives full-time on Shelter Island.

Schultheis, in 11th grade, is currently participating in the drama club and art club. According to her bio in the Parrish program, Margaret’s plans for the future include tattooing and illustration.

About the 2022 Student Exhibition

A 65-year tradition at the Parrish, the annual Student Exhibition features the work of more than 600 young artists and provides an overview of the high level of creativity and accomplishment in the region’s schools.

Working with their art teachers, students demonstrate imagination, enthusiasm, and technical skill in diverse media such as painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, collage and textiles.

The museum, at 279 Montauk Highway in Water Mill, is open Thursday through Monday from 11 AM to 5 PM (until 8 PM on Friday). To learn more, visit parrishart.org/.
