Get the most out of summer with the Shelter Island Recreation Department. Summer program registration begins April 3. Space is limited, so sign up early.

It’s time to sign kids up for Shelter Island Town Recreation 2022 summer programs, which include options for budding thespians, artists, athletes, and more. There’s also a chance for people of any age to sign up for Community Tennis.

Speed, Strength, and Hoops

Starting May 31, this youth athletic development program is for children ages 13+ (grades 6 through 8). The program has two components. First, participants will sharpen their basketball skills. Next, they’ll train to become a more well-rounded athlete regardless of their preferred sport. They’ll work on principles of training for speed, strength, and conditioning.

LOCATION: Fiske Field
AGES: 13+
INSTRUCTORS: Charlie Binder and Matt Dunning
DAYS/TIME: Starting May 31 and through the summer; Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3 to 5 PM
FEE: $30/day or $200/month

This is a time for kids to show off their theatrical skills — and no prior experience is necessary. Please pack a bagged lunch.

Extreme STEAM

Extreme STEAM brings together activities for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math. Please pack a bagged lunch.

Shelter Island Junior Artists

A fun-filled studio art class. Children will have the opportunity to explore multiple mediums and techniques while creating unique pieces of art. Please pack a bagged lunch.

Plants and Potions with Ms. Stumme

Learn how to make healthy, homemade items such as goats’ milk soap, bath bombs, essential oil potions, farm-to-table herbs for cooking, and much, much more. In this club, students will work with plants and natural remedies to create safe, homemade products that they can use at home. Space is limited to 12 students.

Stop Motion Film

Calling all junior directors! In this club, you’ll get the chance to make a short film that you design. Students will learn different animation styles and techniques through the art of stop motion animation. At least one student per group must have parent permission to download “Stop Motion Studio” on their smartphone.

Colonial Multi-Sport Program

Colonial Sports presents a two-week multi-sports program. Participants will receive instruction in each sport and experience the sport during game situations. All activities will take place in an atmosphere that promotes good sportsmanship, teamwork, and most of all fun! Sign up for one week or both. Please pack a bagged lunch.

Level I — Intro to the water, ages 4 and up. A parent/guardian must be present to assist children that can’t float on their own (maximum 6 students)
Level II — Working on independent floating, beginner strokes/ A parent/guardian must be present to assist children that can’t float on their own (maximum 10 students)
Level III — Developing basic strokes, must (maximum 10 students)
Level IV — Working on additional strokes & endurance (maximum 10 students)

LOCATION: Wades Beach
AGES: 4 and up

Sports Skills Program

A youth athletic development program for children ages 5 to 16 of all ability levels. Participants will play in organized drills and games to improve athletic ability, coordination, and teamwork in basketball, dodgeball, kickball, obstacle course, and soccer. Certified professionals provide guidance and coaching. Participants should bring snacks; the program will provide water.

Community Summer Tennis

Moussa Drame offers a chance for Islanders to have fun while learning the great sport of tennis. The program is set up to accommodate all levels.
