SIPD: 200 calls during Isaias

The Shelter Island Police Department said 200 calls were received during Tropical Storm Isaias and the department documented 50 incidents during a 12-hour period.

SIPD Chief James J. Read said Wednesday morning that the Town’s Emergency Operations Center got calls about downed trees, wires, power outages, fires, and more during the storm. The SIPD worked with PSEGLI to coordinate power restoration.

The Shelter Island Fire Department responded to five calls during the emergency: a transformer fire (on Ram Island), a generator fire (at the IGA), smoke in a basement, a brush fire, and live wires in a roadway.

The Shelter Island Highway Department worked throughout the 12-hour period to remove trees and branches blocking roadways and shoulders and they aided PSEGLI with power restoration.

No medical emergencies were dispatched. Chief Read said the PSEGLI outage map showed about 23 percent of Island customers remained without power as of Wednesday morning.

“I currently believe this estimation is higher than actual based on PD field data,” he said in a news release around 10:30 AM.
