The Shelter Island Historical Society announced this morning that its annual car show is cancelled. The show, featuring rare and collectible cars and antique fire apparatus, is held in conjunction with the Fire Department. It was slated to take place at Fireman’s Field, on the corner of Burns and Cartwright roads, on Saturday, June 27.
Antique car enthusiasts sign up to show their vehicles and the two non-profits share the proceeds — registration fees, plus sales of tickets and SIFD barbecue refreshments served in the shade of a spacious tent.
The car show joins other spring/summer events cancelled, altered or postponed due to the novel coronavirus:
- Shelter Island Friends of Music April concert
- Shelter Island Historical Society, Shelter Island Public Library, Shelter Island Youth Center, Shelter Island Senior Citizen Activity Center, Our Lady of the Isle R.C. Church, Shelter Island Presbyterian Church, St. Mary’s Episcopal Church — closed, all in-person events/activities cancelled

- Sylvester Manor’s Farm to Table Dinner — trails are open/farm stand has curbside pickup, all in-person events/activities cancelled

Along with many other numerous events and activities, large and small, planned by organizations and businesses. Not to mention private gatherings in celebration of milestones like weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, and religious and secular holidays, and even funerals.
The Shelter Island 10K Run has not announced whether it will host the event currently scheduled for Saturday, June 20. In its 41st year, the 10K usually attracts about 1,500 registered runners and walkers, and is coordinated with the support of dozens of local volunteers. Race Director M.E. Adipietro told the Gazette last week that organizers plan to speak with town officials again on May 20. They met in April and decided to wait another month to see how impacts of the COVID-19 outbreak may affect the event. She said they will decide after the meeting May 20 to decide whether to go ahead with the race.
